Growing Up Blue

As part of the New Playwrights Series, Growing Up Blue by playwright Iggy Orlando was selected by Theatre School faculty for a full production. The play follows the journey of a young transgender/gender non-conforming protagonist named Blue as they struggle to figure out who they are and how they fit within their family. For this process, I spent most of my time in brainstorming sessions with Iggy and giving feedback on drafts and runs. My assistant dramaturg and I also created a website where the design team and cast could access topics like gender terminology, a brief timeline of bathroom bills in the U.S., and slaughterhouses. I found the talkbacks I led for this show to be particularly fruitful because Iggy got the chance to hear how audience members responded to particular moments and trans/GNC patrons expressed how they related to the characters.
